Pre-Course Training Modules – due May 29, 2023

In order to ensure that each of you can initiate your research projects quickly and proceed successfully during the 10-week program, we have designed three short introductory training modules on scientific research and its application. The modules cover three broad topics: (1) the scientific method, (2) the mathematics of performing unit conversions and making laboratory solutions, and (3) DNA technology. Each module runs approximately 15 minutes long, but students may take as long as needed to complete it. These modules are meant to help bridge any gaps in knowledge or to provide a refresher on previously acquired knowledge necessary to engage in the type of scientific research that interns will experience through our program.

After studying the module, you must complete a short 10-question quiz and answer at least 70% of the questions correctly. The modules may be accessed as many times as necessary. However, if you fail to achieve the 70% score required to pass, you must wait at least one day and study the entire module again before retaking the quiz. We will not accept new quiz results submitted the same day. If you have any questions about this process, please email Dr. Matthew Medeiros, at mcmedeir@hawaii.edu.

Please register on this site before taking the quizzes. A log-in is required to receive credit for completing the modules, as quiz scores will be relayed to REU administers to verify completion.

Cultural Site Preparedness – Working @ Ulupō Heiau

To prepare you for our visits and what to expect with Kauluakala please complete Unit 1: Hoʻomākaukau (chrome works best).  The module will go through pre-visit information, entering, what to expect during and how to exit.  As part of our engagement with place we will be participating in formal entering cultural protocol (to ask permission to enter) that will require our group to provide an oli (chant), mele (song), or haʻi ʻolelo (speech in native tongue).  We will be learning an oli all together as a group during the first week, but if you feel comfortable we would love each of you to share a chant/song/speech from your culture as part of these protocols. We will also be presenting all of our speakers/hosts small makana (gifts) in thanks – so we encourage each of you to bring something small to contribute to these makana if you can.

Safety Training – must be completed by June 5, 2023

Please complete the three online safety trainings prior your start in your assigned research lab. You will not be allowed to do any work in any lab if you do not complete them. They are offered through the UH Environmental Health and Safety Office and are meant to keep you comfortable and safe in the research lab. Upload your certification documents to our google classroom and share with your mentor.

A) You will receive an invitation from the UH Laulima online system to complete the two online safety trainings prior your start in your assigned research lab.
The two trainings are the Initial Lab Safety training and the Hazardous Waste Generator training.

Follow the instructions on the “Overview” tab to the left of the page.
Once you successfully complete the quiz, you will be issued a verification certification of training.

B) You will also need to complete ORC 101 – Initial General Biosafety. A UH ID is required for enrollment.  Once you receive your ID you will be able to complete the training via Bioraft.
